Weekly report w/e 3rd November 2019

On Sunday over 53,000 runners pounded the streets of the Big Apple across all five boroughs in the 49th edition of the New York City Marathon.

Ballymena Runners had four runners at the event - Jonathan Graham (4:00:14), Geraldine McClintock (4:28:02), Glenn McGall (4:46:36) and Chris Young (3:48:35) - with two of them taking another step forward in their quest to achieve the coveted six-star medal for completing the Abbot World Marathon Majors series.

For Glenn it was his fifth event (London, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin and New York) with only Boston remaining, while Chris is now on number four with Boston and Tokyo left to complete. Huge congratulations to all four athletes on what was, by all reports, a challenging run.

Also on Sunday, but a lot closer to home, the club were well represented at the Decathlon 10k in the shadow of George Best Belfast City Airport.

Geraldine Quigley finished 3rd female in 42:02 while Chris Davies ran 43:53 to record a new personal best and complete the full set of PB's this year. Amongst those also running in club colours were Owen Dempster, Eamon McKillop, Mary Dempster, Lee Bore and Aidy Dodds.

The cross country season continued on Saturday with the 85th edition of the McConnell Shield in Ballyclare.

As ever, the club had a strong representation over the grass and mud with pride of place going to the Kathleen Law, Zara Surgenor and Linda Petticrew who secured the runners-up spot in the ladies team event.

Also competing were Kieran Scullion, Ian McCracken, John Hasson, John Donnelly, Brigid Quinn, James Galbraith, Ray Curran, Naomi Hutchinson, Aine Hasson and Helen Metrustry.
